The majority of it is John Fahey's arrangement but I got a bit carried away and started to add my own little bluesy things to it.
For this weeks #transcriptiontuesday I took a look at Charlie Parker’s awesome solo on his 1945 recording with Dizzy Gillespie and his Rebop Six. It’s an absolute masterclass in how to nail a II V I’s...I must admit this one absolutely kicked my arse 🍑 and it’s been a real learning curve trying to get all of these lines down. 2 weeks ago I thought I wouldn’t have a chance in hell in learning this but I stuck with it, wood shedded the fuck out of it and worked my balls off 🍒 until I could just about get through it without cringing 😬... Those of you who have been following my #100daysofpractice will recognise a lot of these lines. I decided to learn most of them in all 12 keys to really get them under my fingers. Anyway head over to my soundslice page for my transcription! Enjoy.

For this weeks #transcriptiontuesday I decided to take a look at the muted trumpet solo on Duke Ellington's arrangement of 'Take The A Train'... Ray Nance plays a brilliantly concise and swinging solo this was a great lesson in phrasing and a good reminder that sometimes keeping things simple is all you need, as Thelonious Monk once said “Don't play everything (or every time); let some things go by… What you don't play can be more important than what you do.” If you fancy learning it then head over to my soundslice page:

This weeks #transcriptiontuesday is this beautiful solo by Lester Young over a chorus of ‘The Man I Love’ from a 1939 recording he made with Billie Holiday. I love the way his solos swoop up and down, soaring and fluttering - it evokes the memories in me of watching the seabirds that would dive into the ocean on their hunt for prey. I’d sit and watch them whilst supping on a negroni, somewhere on the coast of Amalfi back in my cruise ship days. Ah. He’s got such a unique sense of time and feel. It was an absolute joy to transcribe this one. Head over to my soundslice for the transcription:

For this weeks #transcriptiontuesday I thought I’d take a look at Hubert Rostaing’s solo over the Django Reinhardt classic ‘Swing 42’. I’ve always loved the lines he plays over the I VI II V so I thought it was worth transcribing and learning. I think it’s easy to over look some of the brilliant musicians Django used to play with (what with Django stealing the show) but there are some real gems in those recordings of Django when he was holed up in Paris during WW2. Lady Be Good!” with Jay McShann. It was quite a mission to transcribe this... some of these lines do not fall where you think they will and it throws you off track. That little arpeggio shift between the G major and G diminished took a fair amount of wood shedding to get accurate too.

Feeling grateful that lockdown has at least afforded me plenty of time to get my shit together.

This week I learnt Lester Young's beautiful solo over 'All of Me' on a previously unreleased recording session with Billie Holiday. “Why would anyone discard such a masterpiece?”, I hear you ask. It was a brilliant way of spending lockdown - his solos are so inventive and had such a lyrical way of moving through the changes. I learnt alot about phrasing a solo and trying to keep melodic lines simple.

Anyway I've just started the process of videoing some of these solos so I can put them up on SoundSlice so you guys can learn them too!

Arr. Norman Blake )
I've been recently trying to explore my musical horizons a little - getting into bluegrass and country. This sort of flat picking for whatever reason has always evaded my list of things to learn! I heard this tune years ago on the 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' soundtrack but only bothered transcribing and learning it this past week. It's a gorgeously simple but effective piece of guitar playing by Norman Blake. Hope you like it!

It's an amalgamation of ideas taken from Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel with a good dollop of me thrown in for good measure. I like this sort of guitar playing... it feels nice to play when you get that thumb swinging on 2 & 4 and you can get a bit carried away with it all and for a moment you forget all the shit that is going on around you. Anyway, for you guitarists out there there's a free transcription / TAB in the downloads page if you fancy learning it - better still - get in touch and I'll teach it to you.

At the time I thought it was all rather embarrassing and was in it mainly for the pork scratchings (20 years before they were cool I hasten to add) and of course the odd occasional pint of beer or most likely half a shandy. Little did I know at the time that I'd spend the rest of my life playing those tunes to unsuspecting audiences and how much I'd learn to love this sort of music.

Anyway here's an old morris dance tune called Swaggering Boney. I've been teaching it recently at Cecil Sharp House for the English Folk Dance and Song Society - if you want to learn it then its available to download on my downloads page.

It was amazing to be part of something so ambitious and groundbreaking. I'm in complete awe of the entire cast and technical teams that made it happen. Well done to all involved!

I really love his phrasing and thought I'd learn a lot by really honing in on what he does in his solos.. anyway I've also recently become aware of 'Soundslice' - basically a video / notation website where you can watch the score being played.

I thought some of you might appreciate this service so I've started my own SoundSlice page and will be posting up my jazz transcriptions on here and on there as and when I do them! I hope you find them useful.. if you want to throw me some pennies for my effort then please feel free!

Here's a tune I'm currently teaching on my beginners folk guitar course at Cecil Sharp House, London for the EFDSS. I've loved this tune for years since first hearing it played by Martin Carthy on his British Fingerstyle Guitar VHS. He's got a fantastic new album out 'Uncovered' which was recorded with Martin Simpson and I've been asked to fill his very big and incredibly talented shoes on tour.

“Uncovered” includes interpretations of nine painstakingly chosen songs created in many instances by peers and contemporaries of Steve, those with shared histories and some that he admired from afar. These are songs with heft and honesty that have always connected and resonated within him; this is material that he’s always wanted to perform and may even wish he’d written! This diverse collection of Harley’s Interpretations is in some ways an almanac rather than just a set of great tracks: Steve’s links with some of the songwriters go back to the very start of their careers: Bowie in Beckenham; Dylan throughout his early teens; Cat Stevens/Yusuf and Paul McCartney, both massive early influences…

I'll be touring as part of his new acoustic band featuring: Steve Harley on vocals and guitars, Barry Wickens on viola, violin, mandolin and acoustic guitar, Oli Hayhurst on double bass and Tom Hooper on percussion.

I'm really excited! Come and watch us. Links to tour dates are below!

Here is a great little outro lick to get round your fingers! Its taken from Willie Brown's masterpiece 'Ragged and Dirty' which can be found on the Library of Congress record LSF-59. If you want to play along to the record make sure you stick the capo on the 7th fret.
This week I decided to look at arguably Robert Johnsons most famous song - Kind Hearted Woman Blues. I love the changes between the Dom7, Dim7 and Min6 all derived from one simple chord shape. These chord changes have become pretty much synonymous with blues guitar and are a must to learn for any budding blues guitarists! Have fun!
David Delarretag:www.daviddelarre.co.uk,2005:Post/58777152019-09-04T08:00:00+01:002020-01-16T14:47:49+00:00Come and Learn Folk Guitar With Me!
For a few years now I've been teaching a series of folk guitar workshops on a Saturday afternoon at Cecil Sharp House. Its a great song littered with lots of sexual innuendo and metaphor about his car not working properly anymore. I expect he used to play it with a slide in open A tuning E A E A C# E with a capo on the 2nd fret, but I'm playing it in standard with a capo on the 3rd fret. This is mainly because I suck at slide and altereed tunings!

It was made famous by Eric Clapton and is a great example of Robert Johnson playing around with the blues. The harmonic movement from C7 - F/A - Fm/Ab - G7 is very reminiscent of rag time guitarists like Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy or Lonnie Johnson. Make sure you listen to the original to get an idea of the swing and groove in the the 4th measure.

It moves between the I-IV-I-V chord changes in the two measure phrase and uses that classic shuffle rhythm. I love the chord voicing for the B7 chord too - the 5th in the bass really adds a lot of dirt to the chord.
I'm super excited to announce that I'll be co-leading a musicians retreat with Laurel Swift from the 25 - 29th of November this year at Halsway Manor. I've heard lots of great things about 'hallsy' but I've never had the joy of going so I'm really excited about this opportunity to teach, play and make new musical acquaintances. The retreat is for players of any level except complete beginners, and all instruments are welcome. You’ll need to be able to play by ear or be prepared to have a go; if you’re not used to playing by ear then you’ll need to be of an ‘intermediate or above’ standard on your instrument. You can be new to folk, a seasoned folkie, or somewhere in-between. You can find out more about the retreat here:

Please share it around with anyone you think might be interested!

cheers

This is like a short hand version of what he plays for the song 'Saturday Blues'. I love the way it moves between swung and straight and is really heavy on the downbeat.
David Delarretag:www.daviddelarre.co.uk,2005:Post/58612292019-08-05T13:00:00+01:002019-08-17T21:00:35+01:00Delta Blues Monday #21
This slinky little lick comes from the amazing fingers of Son House from his 1930's recording of 'Dry Spell Blues'. Due to my woeful lack of skill in the slide department I've attempted to arrange his lick to work in Standard tuning with a capo on the 1st fret. He plays it in open G tuning (DGDGBD) with a capo on the 3rd I expect. Anyway, check out his version and play along!

Its the intro lick to 'Phonograph Blues (Take 1)' - its a lovely song that really hasn't recieved the amount of attention it deserves I think mainly because of its similarity to 'Kind Hearted Woman Blues' which is by far the one of the most well known blues' in his repertoire. Anyway if you want to play along with him don't forget to put the capo on fret 2! I hope you enjoy it!

This weeks #DeltaBluesMonday features all of those lovely colour tones b3, 3, 4, b5 and b7 but it also shows how you can use one idea to cover 4 bars. Less is definitely more! I think its always good to play something twice if it sounds good and it can be really interesting hearing how the functionality of the intervals change with the chords.

Delta Blues Mondays!
Hi Guys,

I always get a bit blue on Mondays. I guess its a bit of a come down from a lovely weekend of playing gigs and dashing around the country, so this year to combat those feelings I've decided to do something creative with my time. Every week on a Monday I'll release a video of a fabulous delta blues lick (and teach it to you) on my YouTube Channel. I thought I should take inspiration from my Monday blues and do something fun and bluesy! Along with the video will be a free TAB/Score!

Let me know what you think!

cheers

All of these changes means I find myself being able to finally work on some solo material thats been bouncing around in my brain for sometime. I'm hoping to create a bit of a Vlog/Blog/YouTube channel dedicated to this side of my work and I hope you guys will want to get involved with that - any suggestions for videos etc will be greatly appreciated! You can contact me here.

All in all, a very exciting time to create a new website! Have a look around, theres videos, photos, tutorials and you can even book a Skype lesson! Thanks for reading guys!

cheers
