I've been running a subscribers only group guitar lesson for a couple of months now. I'm really enjoying it! So far we have looked at Martin Carthy's arrangement of "The Trees They Do Grow High", Blind Boy Fullers "Weeping Willow" and we've just started looking at strumming techniques and briefly looked at Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". 

I've currently got 10 in that class and I'm looking to get another group going - possibly splitting them into two tiers; beginners and intermediates. Its £20 a month, you get a group lesson every 2 weeks plus videos, pdfs and my ears to give some feedback.

I had the pleasure of performing my first ever solo folk set for Ciaran Algar's Corona Collaborations Festival over the weekend. This was my second number (straight after my glorious debut on the kazoo).. I've been writing a solo album of traditional material from Essex and London to keep my creative juices flowing and to be honest, just to cheer myself up. Not sure if it'll ever get released but I can actually listen to this song and not cringe so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Here's my arrangement of a lovely little traditional reel from Ireland. I've been teaching this one on my folk guitar course at Cecil Sharp House in London. I recently purchased a new pickup for my Larivee D-05 which enables me to mic up each string individually so I've put the bottom three strings into an octave and reverb pedal! I sneak it on in the B section.. Hope you like it! I'm still getting used to it.

Here's a lovely old gospel song arranged by Martin Simpson. I've been teaching this recently on my guitar course at Cecil Sharp House, London for the English Folk Dance and Song Society. I do have the TAB for this if anyone is interested.

I've loved this tune for years since first hearing it played by Martin Carthy on his British Fingerstyle Guitar VHS. He plays it in C using his CGCDGA tuning but I've decided to do an arrangement of it in Drop D. I hope you like it!

Very excited to tell you all I'll be going on tour with Steve Harley this spring! He's got a fantastic new album out 'Uncovered' which was recorded with Martin Simpson and I've been asked to fill his very big and incredibly talented shoes on tour. 

“Uncovered” includes interpretations of nine painstakingly chosen songs created in many instances by peers and contemporaries of Steve, those with shared histories and some that he admired from afar.  These are songs with heft and honesty that have always connected and resonated within him; this is material that he’s always wanted to perform and may even wish he’d written!  This diverse collection of Harley’s Interpretations is in some ways an almanac rather than just a set of great tracks: Steve’s links with some of the songwriters go back to the very start of their careers: Bowie in Beckenham; Dylan throughout his early teens; Cat Stevens/Yusuf and Paul McCartney, both massive early influences…

I'll be touring as part of his new acoustic band featuring: Steve Harley on vocals and guitars, Barry Wickens on viola, violin, mandolin and acoustic guitar, Oli Hayhurst on double bass and Tom Hooper on percussion.

For a few years now I've been teaching a series of folk guitar workshops on a Saturday afternoon at Cecil Sharp House. I love it! We always get a good amount of people (10-15) and its a really relaxed and fun way of learning in a group.

I'm super excited to announce that I'll be co-leading a musicians retreat with Laurel Swift from the 25 - 29th of November this year at Halsway Manor. I've heard lots of great things about 'hallsy' but I've never had the joy of going so I'm really excited about this opportunity to teach, play and make new musical acquaintances. The retreat is for players of any level except complete beginners, and all instruments are welcome. You’ll need to be able to play by ear or be prepared to have a go; if you’re not used to playing by ear then you’ll need to be of an ‘intermediate or above’ standard on your instrument. You can be new to folk, a seasoned folkie, or somewhere in-between. You can find out more about the retreat here:

Hi Guys,

I always get a bit blue on Mondays. I guess its a bit of a come down from a lovely weekend of playing gigs and dashing around the country, so this year to combat those feelings I've decided to do something creative with my time. Every week on a Monday I'll release a video of a fabulous delta blues lick (and teach it to you) on my YouTube Channel. I thought I should take inspiration from my Monday blues and do something fun and bluesy! Along with the video will be a free TAB/Score!

I've finally got round to updating my website, its been on the to do list for some time (right next to learning piano, crocheting a star wars character and boxing). 2019 is shaping up to be a year of dramatic changes in my musical life; Mawkin (my folk band of 16 years) will be hanging up their folk beards later this year and Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band will be having some what of a fallow year writing tunes and keeping their collective heads out of trouble. All of these changes means I find myself being able to finally work on some solo material thats been bouncing around in my brain for sometime. I'm hoping to create a bit of a Vlog/Blog/YouTube channel dedicated to this side of my work and I hope you guys will want to get involved with that - any suggestions for videos etc will be greatly appreciated!
